I Made Some Really Creepy Clowns in Midjourney and Now I Can't Sleep

Being afraid of clowns is literally more common than being afraid of heights, and I made the pictures to prove it.

According to researchers at the University of South Wales, "Coulrophobia" or fear of clowns - yes, it's a real thing - is literally more common than the fear of heights. The makeup that clowns wear evokes emotional responses around death, decay, mortality, and blood. Combine that with the fact that the makeup also makes it difficult to ascertain the clown's true emotional expression, and you've got a potent receipe for creepy.

So, of course, I had to try my hand at some creepy clowns on Midjourney. Armed with nothing more than a prompt and a dream - i'll get back to the dream part in a minute - I took to Discord and decided to put in a variety of prompts related to "creepy clowns." They didn't really deliver what I wanted. Though, even the most rudimentary, base prompt "creepy clowns" gave me these gems:

Love the outfits, love the hair. But I'm needing to set the scene for some truly creepy stuff here. So I decided to add to my prompt. I did a little bit of rudimentary prompt engineering and, after a long process of iterations, settled on "confessional dark fantasy clown priest". Admittedly, I had absolutely zero idea that was where this journey was headed, but this is where this journey ended up. Hey, maybe that's why they call it mid-journey?

Here were my results:

Aaarragghhh! Ok yeah, that first one is still freaking me out. So yes, I made some creepy confessional dark fantasy priest clowns on Midjourney, and yes, I literally had nightmares about them.

So then I thought, "I know! I'll create a design for my next dream where I catch them all in a giant net!" Alright, let's go. /imagine catch a large group of dark fantasy clowns in a giant net

Somehow I should have predicted this:
